Top tips for staying fit while travelling

Travelling is an exciting and adventurous experience, but it can often take a toll on our fitness routines. But it doesn’t have to.

Whether it's the temptation of trying out new food or the lack of access to your usual gym, it can be challenging to stay fit while on the go. However, with a little bit of planning and effort, you can easily maintain your fitness routine even while travelling. If it's something you struggle with, we have some useful tips to help you keep on top of everything while on the road.

The benefits

When your itinerary is filled with nothing but spending time by the pool or totally jam-packed days exploring new places and sightseeing, it can be hard to motivate yourself to get a workout in. We’ve all been there. But taking even 10 minutes out of your day for a quick sweat will be worthwhile.

It’ll give you more energy, allowing you to make the most of every single day. In the same vein, it’ll help you sleep better. This means you’ll wake up feeling refreshed and recharged, ready for another day of activities. It’ll keep your brain happy and your mental health ticking over. But also keeping on top of your exercise routine will maintain your momentum so when you return from your trip, you avoid that post-holiday slump when everything feels that little bit harder when starting to get back into your fitness routine.

1. Be prepared

Before setting off on your travels, make sure to pack any clothes you think you’ll need and any equipment that could help you. If your luggage space allows, pack a small fitness kit that includes resistance bands, skipping ropes, and yoga mats. These items are lightweight, easy to pack, and will help you stay active no matter where you are. You can easily squeeze in a quick workout routine in your hotel room.

2. Incorporate fitness into your sightseeing

Walking is one of the easiest and most effective ways to stay fit while travelling. Instead of using public transport or taxis, try to opt for walking to your destination and incorporate walking into your sightseeing activities. Walking not only helps you burn calories but also allows you to explore the area and its surroundings. It’s an easy way to get your steps in! Some places also offer bike rental services that allow you to explore on two wheels.

3. Try something new and fun

Travelling provides an excellent opportunity to try out new activities that you may not have had the chance to do at home. From hiking and surfing to kayaking and rock climbing, there are endless options to choose from. These activities are not only fun but also provide an excellent workout for your body.

Also, if you’re by a pool or beach, swimming is a fantastic way to smash out some cardio. Bonus points if you can get in the water before sunrise – the view of the sun coming up will beat the inside of your local gym any day of the week.

Make the time for it

Making the time during your trip by scheduling a workout is the best way to make sure you get it done. It could be something as simple as adding it onto your daily routine which could be every day before breakfast, you get a quick session in. Having the time scheduled so you know when you’ll be getting moving is the first step to success and having the time blocked gives you more accountability.
