About The Airport

Greece's primary airport, Athens International, is busiest in the summer (June to September), although at other times of year it can be pleasantly quiet. The airport's official name is Athens International Airport "Eleftherios Venizelos", named for the country's former Prime Minister who helped to significantly develop Greek aviation during the 1930s; this long name is often shortened to AIA. The airport has a single main terminal.

Free Wi-Fi is available for an unlimited number of 45-minute sessions.

The airport is 31km from downtown Athens.

Taxi - metered taxis are available on Arrivals Level, Exit 3, with flat fares from the airport to downtown Athens.

Bus - 4 city bus routes connect the airport with Athens and Piraeus.

Train - Metro Line 3 connects the airport to downtown Athens every 30 minutes. Athens Suburban Railway also serves the airport, with departures every 15-25 minutes.

Hotel shuttle - courtesy shuttles are available to several nearby hotels including the boutique Peri's Hotel and the Holiday Inn Athens Airport.

Car rental - half a dozen car rental agencies offer their services on the Arrivals Level.

Limousine - Limousines are available on request from outside the Arrivals area, between Exits 3 and 4.

The airport offers both short- and long-term parking. Short-term lots (P1 and P2) are a 2-minute walk away from the terminal building and the first 20 minutes of parking is free of charge. The long-term lot (P3) has 24-hour customer service and can be accessed by foot using the pedestrian bridge or the free shuttle bus; both options take less than 10 minutes. If you park here, be sure to note down the colour, letter and number of the sign where your car is parked. Electric vehicle drivers can charge their vehicles without paying any extra in P2. Visitors can save money by booking a space in advance.

Transit arrangements are straightforward in this single-terminal airport.

There are no hotels within the airport, however the Sofitel Athens Hotel is located directly opposite the terminal building.

Healthy Travel Tip

Athens gets very hot in summer and holds the record for highest temperature ever recorded in Europe: 118.4°F. Remember to keep well hydrated, and always carry a bottle of water with you.
