Panama Tocumen International

Panama, Panama

About The Airport

Although it's one of the busiest airport hubs in Central America, Tocumen currently has just 1 passenger terminal. Designed by Foster + Partners, a second terminal is currently under construction and is expected to be opened to the public in 2019. In 2018, Panama Airport was rated the 6th best airport in the world for on-time flight performance by the OAG. In homage to Panama's diverse landscape and climate, the plans include for there to be an open garden and a roof that allows for plenty of natural light.

Getting to and from the airport

The airport is 22km from downtown Panama City.

Taxi - Tocumen International Airport only allows taxis operated by the Tourist Taxi Service to pick up passengers. Fares are fixed according to destination and number of passengers.

Bus - very cheap buses run to downtown Panama City, but are recommended only for more adventurous travelers. The large white buses that say 'Tocumen' on them accept cash.

Hotel shuttle - courtesy shuttle buses run from the airport to nearby hotels including the Crowne Plaza Panama Airport, Riande Aeropuerto and Courtyard Panama at Metromall.

Car rental - a dozen or so car rental firms offer their services at the airport. You'll find them in Arrivals.

There are no in-airport hotels.

Healthy Travel Tip

The airport can get hot and humid at times - make sure you have plenty of water and a light layer underneath your travel clothes. Panama has a long rainy season and October is the rainiest month - pack an umbrella or light raincoat if you're travelling from May to December.

We do our best to keep these guides as up-to-date as possible, but cannot guarantee that they fully reflect the current state of every airport, where changes can happen frequently and without notice. Please contact us with any feedback.
